FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

First Name and Surname Scrolls | On This Day in History Scrolls and Greetings Cards

First Name and Surname Scrolls

Q: What kind of details are provided in the first and last name scrolls?

A: To see the sort of information provided in the printed scrolls, we have included an example for each: first name and surname.

Q: How long does it take to process and send an order?

A: Most orders are completed and sent within 24-48 hours. Name Scrolls are sent by Royal Mail 1st Class letter post to UK addresses and delivery should take a couple of working days. For orders outside of the UK, we send by AirMail and delivery should take approximately 5-10 days. All name scrolls are sent in A4 sized card backed envelopes for protection. We will send you an email as soon as an order has been sent so that you know your order is on its way.

Q: Can you provide scrolls for any first or last name and what happens if a name is not available?

A: Our name database contains thousands of first and last names and our 'check name' page will allow you to check the name lists to see if a particular name exists in the database. If a name is not listed, we should be able to have this name researched so that we can provide you with name scroll for that particular name. A small additional charge is required in this instance and this can be selected on the order form. If we find that we are unable to obtain details of a particular unlisted name, you will receive a full refund.

Coat of Arms images are not available for every surname, so if this is the case for a surname you order, we can include the image for the country the name originates from, if we are unable to obtain an unlisted Coat of Arms surname. We recommend that you check the availability of Coat of Arms surnames before ordering.

Q: Can I include more than one name scroll in the same order?

A: Yes, just include as many names as you would like to order in the relevant area of the Comments box during the shopping cart checkout. Each name should be separated by a comma. Alternatively, you may want to submit a separate order for separate scrolls, but bear in mind that the shopping cart system will charge the post and packing charge for each separate order submitted.

On This Day in History Scrolls and Greetings Cards

Q: I've seen greetings cards similar to this in greeting card shops, are they the same thing?

A: The cards you may have seen in shops will normally only provide information for the year in question.

The scrolls and cards we provide are personalised with the recipient's name, the day, month, and year of the event, and the name of the event in question. This means that birth date scrolls and cards also include their horoscope sign, the actual day of their birth and the gemstone associated with their horoscope sign. So the scrolls and cards from us are fully personalised and printed by us with the details you provide us with. They are not 'off-the-shelf' pre-printed products.

Q: What type of paper are the On This Day in History scrolls and greetings cards printed on?

A: Scrolls are printed on high quality plain white paper and greetings cards on high quality matt card. The greetings cards also include an envelope.

Q: Are there any messages printed inside the greetings cards?

A: No, these are left blank for your own message.

Q: How long is the order process for the On This Day in History scrolls and greetings cards?

A: Orders for these are processed the same as First Name and Surname scrolls (normally within 24-48 hours).

Q: Can I specify any date for On This Day in History scrolls and greetings cards?

A: You can enter any date, but this must be a date from 1 January 1900 up to the present day. No information is available for dates prior to 1 Jan 1900.

Some details on your scroll or greetings card will show a comparison between the event date/year and the present day date, so event dates based on present day dates will have less or no comparisons. Also, the Sporting Winners section may contain less or no information for present day event dates.

Q: What year should I enter in the date?

A: Some people might be inclined to think they should enter the year for an upcoming or recent past event, i.e. a retirement or 60th birthday will be on 1 September 2008, so they may think they should enter the year as 2008 because it is the year of the upcoming or recent event - this is not the case. The year you should enter is the year that the past event started, so this should be the birth year, year of the wedding, etc. This may seem obvious, but it could cause a slight confusion or misunderstanding.

Q: What sort of personalisation is included in the scrolls and cards?

A: Both will include the name(s) of the recipient(s), the event date (i.e. birth date, wedding date, christening date or date for other events) and you can select a country which provides some details related to that country, for example, currency and sporting events for that year specific to the country chosen.

You may specify the 'other' event type when ordering, for example, this could be the date of someone's first job, first (or last!) day at school, graduation, start of a business, or anything else you wish. We have included images showing all the different styles available.  Please see our order page for details of what information is needed to order On This Day in History scrolls and greetings cards.

Q: Why are there different regions/countries listed on your order form, and what do they mean?

A: Our scrolls and greetings cards will print some information related to the region/country specified. This will determine the details shown in the Sporting Winners section. For example, choosing England will show the winning team in the English FA Cup Final for that year, Grand National and Derby Winners, etc. If you choose Scotland this will show the Scottish FA Cup winning team, or if you choose USA it will show sporting winners for Baseball and US Open Golf winners for that year.  Specifying a country will also show the Cost of Living comparisons in the appropriate currency.

Q: I'm slightly confused, is this a separate service or a product of this website?

A: On This Day in History is a service and product provided by AboutNames.co.uk but we have given it a separate domain and website (On-This-Day-in-History.co.uk) containing some of the information on that site.  The rest of the information and ordering is done on this website. So you can order first name and surname scrolls along with On This Day in History scrolls and greetings cards all from this website and in the same order.
